HOW DID PALM PROFESSIONAL COUNSELORS START?

With a background of teaching, I got an opportunity to interact with many young people especially girls. Some were good friends of mine, others could consult me on certain issues. With the experience of teaching in a single girls' school, it was a whole new experience that kept giving me questions on how to handle the various challenges that I used to see at school among which was so touching like the case of a young girl who was defiled by her uncle and she kept on getting nightmares. The stories of incest were common to many students at a very young age of 11, 12 years. It kept painful moments on my heart to look at young girls whose life was distorted with fear, anger and rage.

Boarding schools also had their own challenges. Children were abandoned at school by their own parents throughout the year with no visitations; girls who lacked basic needs like sanitary pads and in the end lost self-control, many became hopeless.

With these painful touching experiences that kept my heart unsettled, I decided to go and do a course in counselling and guidance. This journey was so amazing that my needs assessment was done in schools. I saw the great need to help the young people (youths) especially in my Muslim community where I belong because we had never addressed this great need of instilling hope among the hopeless, helping people with Psycho-social challenges among others. I got an idea to begin a professional counselling firm because the existing methods to handle such cases were traditional and unethical.

One beautiful Sunday morning as we had a bedroom talk with my husband Mr. Menya Asadullah, I aired my dream of opening up a Muslim based counselling firm. Without hesitation, he gave me a green light; that the idea was good and that I should look for a name that was all inclusive since psycho-social challenges cut across all religious denominations.

Being a person that loves nature so much, I picked a Palm tree as a tree of all seasons and this gave birth to Palm Professional Counselors to handle all Psycho-Social Challenges. Immediately my journey began by informing my closet friends that am a professional counsellor ready to offer a service even at a free cost. What kept me going were the great results I got from my first clients among whom was a young girl who had just finished her University degree, married to a man of her dream, and after a few months of honeymoon she conceived and began getting sickly, visiting the health facility, she was found to be HIV positive and the man was negative. This was astonishing. She was overwhelmed and wanted to commit suicide but with God's grace, she was saved from this shock and denial. We had several sessions in which her hope in life was rebuilt.

Thereafter, she got a stable job and as I write this, it is almost 11 years now. She is very happy and positive with life. It was a great achievement to me being a young Counselor then. Together with my friends who we shared the same concerns, after visiting so many schools and talking to students about various psycho-social challenges and how they can overcome them, we realised that many of the challenges students and the youths in general were facing emanated from their parents or guardians. We then embarked on solving this societal challenge from the root and that is the family. With the grace of God, we came up with a happy marriage formulae that addresses almost all marriage/family issues and its results are very amazing. With these impactful sessions, many people got attracted to us and formulated a change agent team. In 2017, we officially registered Palm Professional Counselors as an organisation bent on rebuilding hope and harmony in society. With this organisation, we have impacted so many lives and families that would be in shambles if we didn't reach them.

We are very grateful to the Almighty for using us to serve humanity by rekindling hope and harmony in our society. We thank all our partners for supporting this noble cause.

To extend a helping hand to the needy.

CORE VALUES

Professionalism and integrity:

We follow the rules of counselling as we go about our duty. We care about our image as service providers so we do everything to maintain the trust of the client, family members, friends and the public.

Islamic guidance:

We derive our guidance from Islamic teachings.

Patience:

Everyone who seeks counselling services has a story to tell. We listen to you, as you pour it all out. Only then do we get informed adequately to walk through the dilemma with you, assessing well the context.

Empathy:

We make sure that we understand your situation and put ourselves in your shoes. When you break down in our counselling rooms, we will console you, reminding you that there is still hope and a life of dignity and harmony. However, we will NOT cry with you, for if our counsellor cries as you cry, nobody will be strong enough to support the other!

Respect:

Whether a client is young or old, woman or man, student or working executive, we respect each one who walks into our offices.

Responsibility:

We handle each case opened at PPC with a serious sense of responsibility, as we wish to support you to reach a successful conclusion to your challenge. Many people who have faced a crisis in life and gone on to take an extreme action like suicide, first spoke with somebody who didn't take them seriously.

Willingness to help:

At PPC, we listen to each person without any biases. We have dealt with young people who felt they did not know who they are-gender wise. We have dealt with people who feel addicted to sex or feel their case is beyond help. Yet, with our small but committed team of Counsellors, we worked with our valued client and enabled them re-build hope and dignity and harmony in their life!
